You can learn more about my “Johnny Appleseed for edible natives” venture at this link: What I have been doing, with groups interested in partnering with me, is to walk land trust and other properties, to see what plants are already there, and then make up a list of edible native species that, while not already on the property, should do well if planted on that property. ![]() (BTW, I do not charge for my plants or my time working on these projects.) I have initiated over two dozen such projects in the past five years. I am then partnering with land trusts, cities and towns, schools and colleges, state and federal agencies, tribal groups, organic farms and others to plant plants from my nursery in appropriate places on their properties. Many of the plants in my nursery I propagated from seed that I collected myself others I have obtained from other ethical and reliable sources, such as the Native Plant Trust (formerly the New England Wild Flower Society)’s Nasami Farm. I have set up a nursery (in Weston, MA) where I grow/keep over 1,000 plants of the more than 170 species of plants native to Northeast ecoregions that are edible by people. We find that most home owners can take care of their new gardens on their own, but require assistance when it comes to seasonal maintenance. After completion we walk you through your completed garden to discuss the plants, maintenance, the irrigation system, and any questions you have. Larger projects which require the use of earth moving equipment may take up to 6 weeks or more. Most gardens can be completed in 2-4 weeks, whilst very small gardens may take only a day or two.
